Jan Wegmann „on the search for something yet to be lost“

This piece explores the sounds of radio stations and the spaces between them to find something of value. In the same way black light is sometimes used as a forensic tool to search for hidden clues. The piece searches for new sounds, old sounds and blurs the lines of the immediate and the past. By playing audio files from a computer through a transistor radio, it creates a conversation between times. With the help of an FM transmitter, sounds are fed in from an external source on a specific frequency. A microphone records the radio output, processes it, and plays it back again. This creates a layer of confusion between what is really live and what is played back.

Alex Hawthorn “Ex Undis, Cognitio”

“Ex Undis, Cognitio” makes manifest the radio signals constantly permeating our bodies. Through both pre-recorded and live captured radio signals, set against synthesised music, the piece asks questions about time: when did these signals emanate? How far have they traveled? Our bodies therefor contain multiple times: each signal is a time capsule from the moment it was generated, travelling at light speed through our bodies. Our bodies as antenna, our bodies as interceptors of data and time, shifting constantly with the waves.

Water Stories

Immerse yourself in a meditative and emotional journey as sound artist Lutz Gallmeister and writer Madhvi Ramani take you through five short stories inspired by water. Each narrative dives into the mind of a different character in a different water setting (pool, river, ocean) and is told through sounds, text and live music.

For example, a man with Alzheimer’s finds himself on a beach, confused about how he got there. We bring his setting to life with the crash of waves, the whistle of wind, the creaking of a sailboat. As we hear his thoughts, an electric guitar underscores his feelings of nostalgia and anxiety.

Askee (Sound Performance)

Synthesis techniques, analog modular synthesizers and field recordings form the basis of the project and will be used to guide the listener between real world and fictional realms of sound perception. Daily sound experiments will be made using virtual modular synthesizers to mimic real world sounds, while field recordings will be produced to explore and examine synthetic sounds. By engaging with these unique sound textures, the listener encounters a sonic landscape where boundaries between the real and non-real become blurred

Askee

Askee is centred around the subjects of cryptography and cypher. Over the course of the performance the artist encodes text into sound using self-programmed algorithms based on various text encryption techniques ranging from early telegraph times up to modern digital age. The audience is faced with a wall of information devoid of comprehensible meaning, thus focusing on the rapidly shifting algorithmic sequences .

The title ambiguously refers to both a hypothetical word for a person who is being asked something, as well as the pronunciation of ascii, a wide-spread character encoding format in electronic communication, utilised extensively in the work.

Last Drop
The “Last Drop“ explores concepts surrounding rainfall, water flow, and the lagoons of Lagos city, including the irregular rise of water levels. In the local Lagos community, predominantly inhabited by people living near the sea shore or riverside, the primary occupations are fishing, while women engage in collecting periwinkles. During the rainy season, they anticipate a higher fish yield, but the increased water levels due to the rain prevent them from pursuing their fishing activities. Through this context, it becomes evident that their hope rests on the final rain last drop, symbolizing their optimism for a successful hunting expedition and a bountiful harvest of fish and other aquatic animals.

auvikogue

this piece had been produced for the open call of floating transmission festival 2023.

What is Your True Bearing?
(participatory workshop performance)

„What is your true bearing?“ „What is your true bearing?“ is an in-situ project consisting of series of participatory* actions involving writing, walking and communicating, using walkie talkies as tools for sound transmission and the Q code as a source code for text, culminating in a dispersed group performance and its condensed radio broadcast version, as well as a printed codebook / dictionary**. In practice, the participants should engage in conversations based on sequences of co-written questions and improvised answers to them. While the meaning of each Q (question) code will be agreed and known to everyone taking part, every answer will be unique. There will be up to 8 listening-only stations with amplified walkie-talkies, and up to 8 walkie talkies to be given to the audience when approaching. By changing a channel on a walkie-talkie, the participants will be able to hear either the codes, the questions or the answers, and the listening stations with amplified walkie talkies will broadcast different channels. Both the boat center and the established points will act as listening stations, with amplified walkie talkies receiving both the codes and answers, sent from all around. The broadcast edit would contain a mix of the codes, questions and answers, sequenced, shuffled, or in chapters, depending on the recorded material, representing a take on the social radio play made in realtime. The questions should vary, aiming for statistical, philosophical, practical and abstract aspects of life, and would be developed in a group session and will also be outsourced, quoted and stolen.

You are a (pulsating) radio star

Live radio play

A live radio play about the astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell, who discovered an unusual signal in her data and through her careful observation and perseverance discovered a new type of celestial body: the pulsar.

Although she was actually looking for something else, the faint but perfectly periodic radio wave signal from the supernova remnant did not escape her attention. She even managed to convince her supervisor that she had not made a mistake in setting up the telescope and that it was not a simple interference signal. Even the more or less jokingly considered option of little green alien ‚men‘ was finally ruled out. All doubts were removed when she found another signal of this type in another part of the sky.

Seven years later he was awarded the Nobel Prize, she was not. It was clear to him that he was the captain of the ship and she was just a crew member. Reporters questioned her about her private life rather than her scientific findings.

In a live radio play, the personal exploration of Jocelyn Bell’s narration of her life story meets an abstracted sound model of the discovery of pulsars.

And while you’re at it, it would be super nice if you could add this sentence to the end of my artist bio: „For the Floating Transmissions Festival, she developed a radio play in collaboration with Jacopo Asam, with whom she recently performed at ‚Alles ist schon da – Performing Urban Curating Now‘ and the ‚Klein und Haarig Festival‘.“ The full text would then be

###

After completing her Master’s degree in Physics, Maren Stocklöw (*1994) moved to Hamburg to pursue her curiosity about the world through art. As a student of fine arts, she enjoys working with performance, spoken word, video and sound to find meaning in the ephemeral and to examine small interactions with what she perceives around her. She is particularly interested in the epistemology and social environments in which scientists and engineers find themselves, and the implications of these stereotypes for how our society functions. For the Floating Transmissions Festival, she developed a radio play in collaboration with Jacopo Asam, with whom she recently performed at ‚Alles ist schon da – Performing Urban Curating Now‘ and the ‚Klein und Haarig Festival‘.

TAKE ME TO THE RIVER / BILLE- WALK

We follow the Bille on its last stretch before it flows into the Elbe. We connect with its essence. Establishing a relationship between humans and non-humans in a toxic environment. We walk, we observe, we listen to it, we absorb its vapours and let them flow through our bodies, we become liquid. We are not looking for anything, but perhaps we will find: old/new shores that rebel against binary, geographical and temporal coordinates? Liquid land? Islands? Hydras? Perhaps past, present and future are blurred. Maybe something else is happening.

Tentacular Sound Map
